The KNM exam

KNM means Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij: knowledge of Dutch society. In this exam you show what you know about life in the Netherlands.

What is KNM?

KNM is a knowledge exam. It is not a language exam, so there is no level A1, A2 or B1. KNM is part of all learning routes of the Wet inburgering 2021 (Civic Integration Act 2021).

It is about life in the Netherlands. For example work, housing, health care, school and the rules.

How does the exam work?

  • You take the exam on a computer.
  • The exam takes 45 minutes.
  • The questions are about themes, such as housing or work and income. For each theme you answer questions.

Do I have to take the KNM exam?

You finish the B1 route and the education route with language exams and knowledge exams. In the Z route you do not have to take exams, but you may.

Which exams you have to take, you see in Mijn Inburgering on inburgeren.nl.

Other parts

In the B1 route and the Z route you also do the MAP (Module Arbeidsmarkt en Participatie, labour market and participation). You do it at your municipality (gemeente). You also sign the participation statement (participatieverklaring, PVT).

ONA (Oriƫntatie op de Nederlandse Arbeidsmarkt, orientation on the Dutch labour market) is only for people who integrate under the old law (Wet inburgering 2013), or who integrate voluntarily.

Official practice exams

DUO has 2 KNM practice exams. You find them on the practice page of inburgeren.nl. It is best to take them on a computer.

DutchKlaar is a practice website. We are not DUO and not an official organisation. Rules can change. For your own situation, look in Mijn Inburgering on inburgeren.nl, or ask your municipality (gemeente).
