Level A2

At A2 you understand sentences about things that are important in your daily life. You manage in simple situations.

What are the levels?

A1, A2 and B1 are language levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, in Dutch ERK). It was made by the Council of Europe. There are 6 levels, from A1 to C2. A1 is the lowest level.

The levels are about reading, listening, writing, speaking and having conversations.

What can you do at A2?

  • Understand sentences and common words about things that are important to you.
  • Talk during simple, everyday tasks.
  • Write a short message, such as a thank-you note.
  • Tell about yourself, your background and your surroundings in simple words.

A2 and civic integration

In the B1 route the goal is level B1. Is B1 not possible? After at least 600 hours of lessons you can ask the municipality if the level can be A2. This is only possible in the B1 route, and it is then written in your PIP (persoonlijk plan inburgering en participatie, your personal plan).

Do you have to integrate under the old law (Wet inburgering 2013)? Then you have to pass the language exams at level A2 or higher.

The language exams at A2

At level A2 there are 4 language exams:

  • Reading: you read texts and answer questions. On a computer.
  • Listening: you watch videos, listen to texts and answer questions. On a computer.
  • Speaking: you watch videos and answer questions. On a computer.
  • Writing: 4 writing tasks, such as a short letter or filling in a form. With pen and paper.

Official practice exams

DUO has A2 practice exams for reading, listening, writing and speaking, and also for KNM. The speaking practice exam does not work in the Safari browser.

DutchKlaar is a practice website. We are not DUO and not an official organisation. Rules can change. For your own situation, look in Mijn Inburgering on inburgeren.nl, or ask your municipality (gemeente).
